This is a different post. In so many ways...
- This post is a kind of advertisement, but it is an advertisement of a great product: useful, free, no tricks involved, etc. And this is the product I’m working on! (We are a good team developing it, believe me).
- It is technical. Am I a tech guy by profession, but I use to use this blog for other discussions.
- It is in English :)
Let’s go!
Android Development
If you got here you are interested in AndroidTM development, which is great since Android is a very nice and powerful operating system.
In fact Android is more than an OS, it is a software stack for mobile devices (may be not so mobile in the future) that includes the operating system, middleware, and key applications. Android also provides you a market that makes it easy for you to distribute and sell your applications.
If you are new to all of it, take a look at these links:
- http://developer.android.com/guide/basics/what-is-android.html
- https://market.android.com/
I have this feeling that so far it was all blablabla for you. After all you already know what Android is, right?
So what about development? Off we go.
First thing you need is to have the Android SDK (software development kit), and to understand the Android basics and architecture. Begin by the Dev Guide.
For the development environment, you will probably use Eclipse.
Android provides you a set of plugins called ADT that helps you a lot providing the basics for Android development. Here you will see a step by step on how to install the ADT plugins into your existing Eclipse installation to make it Android aware.
But before going there, take a quick look at the next section.
MOTODEV Studio for Android™
Although Eclipse is great and ADT plugins are great, you can have a more complete and in-a-box experience with MOTODEV Studio for Android.
It is a IDE (Integrated Development Environment) based on Eclipse, that lets developers who are new to Android get started quickly and helps experienced developers get the job done even faster.
Some important points about MOTODEV Studio for Android:
- It is free! Really. You need to create an MOTODEV account and for that you only need an e-mail. With that account you be able to: download Studio, participate in development forums and some more.
- It is for Android development, in general. So, yes, you will be able to create applications for each and every Android device, not only devices from Motorola Mobility, Inc. And your apps are pure Android, no tricks.
- It does not compete with Eclipse. And it does not compete with Google ADT. It works together with those, complementing the existing features with some nice stuff. If you install MOTODEV Studio from scratch (not over an existing Eclipse installation) you will be installing Eclipse plus ADT plus some other features that composes MOTODEV Studio for Android. The only difference is that it will happen on a single step.
- As it was implicit on the previous bullet, there are some other features and possibilities with Studio. For a new developer it will help you with samples, code snippets, wizards to create most common application components and more. For the experienced ones there are features to help you to test, help you localize your apps, perform static analysis, create apps faster, and more.
That all said, my suggestion is for you to try it:
After trying, if you want just appear in the discussion boards for a chat, for questions, suggestions (they will be heard) for help with development… well… you got it.
